Eh, I am still trying to figure out how this happen. I mostly don’t like Homeowner Associations (HOA), because they are a defacto governments within a small community/neighborhood and most times they are set-up long before anyone moves into a single house. I honestly think the smallest government unit should be a city/town.
So anyway I went to the board meeting last night because there was an election of board members. There has been, problems*, with our HOA and I wanted to see how they will move past them. Our small neighborhood board has five members, but one member has not really shown up since late memory. They turned to me and asked if that guy didn’t want to be part of the HOA board anymore, if I wanted to fill out his term. Clearly I have turned some heads in the neighborhood by running for a county elected office.
Several things happen at once:
1) One part of my mind remember my father’s words that I should be part of a local non-profit club, to put on my “running for office” resume.
2) Another part register my dislike for HOA.
However both thoughts were put aside quickly. I realized the reason I started running for office in the first place was because I thought I can make a difference. I believe in our Republic form of government, the idea that a government (or in this case, a HOA) that rules less, rules the best.
If this guy does step down, I will go into this noting that and I am for the community/neighborhood. I hope I can bring a sense that we are all adults and we can settle any neighborhood dispute without (for example) suing one or another. That people basicly have the right to do what they will with their homes. I will also serve out this guy’s term and not run again.
I’m not doing this because I dislike, generally, HOAs or to pad myself for elected office. I was ask to lead and so I will lead if I can. After the term is up, I will step down hoping I made some kind difference. The first HOAs was first started to serve the community/neighborhood and not to be their overlords. I hope to bring back that kind trust with our HOA. I also hope to bring about more interest to the HOA of our neighborhood. Like with any other form of governance, the more everyday people are envolved, the better it is.
Well, see ya’ later!
